Helium-filled HDD

A sealed hard drive filled with helium to reduce platter drag and allow more disks in the same form factor.

Helium HDDs hermetically seal the head-disk assembly and fill it with helium instead of air. Helium’s density is about one-seventh that of air, which lowers aerodynamic drag and turbulence so platters spin with less power, heads fly more stably, and vendors can pack thinner platters—and thus more surfaces—into the same 3.5-inch envelope. Western Digital’s HelioSeal materials describe laser-welded seals and leak testing as part of manufacturing. Helium is a packaging and mechanics innovation: CMR, SMR, HAMR, or MAMR recording modes still run inside the sealed chassis. Primary benefits cited by vendors are capacity per drive, watts per TB, and vibration/acoustics in dense racks—not lower seek latency.
